There are two types of conventional water heaters: gas and electric. While an electric water heater can be used almost anywhere, a gas water heater is most likely to be installed in a home that already uses gas for another appliance.

If you've decided to install a new water heater or replace an old one, the job should be performed by professional plumbers like Lots Repipe & Plumbing Services. As specialized plumbers we will consider factors like available space, whether or not to increase the unit's holding capacity, the unit's energy efficiency and so on.

When looking for a water heater, consider the following features:

  • > Gallon capacity (40-gallon and 50-gallon heaters are most common)
  • > Recovery rate (the number of gallons the heater will heat in an hour)
  • > Dimensions
  • > The energy efficiency rating

The installation of a water heater means to put the new unit in place and connect the water supply lines and electricity. Masking tape is useful for marking water lines and electrical wires. Sometimes is necessary to add threaded fittings (if they are not there already) to the ends of the existing pipes so you can connect them to the new water heater with the appropriate supply lines. If you have copper pipes, this will require soldering the fittings to the pipes. If your pipes are rigid plastic (CPVC), they can be added by solvent welding.

Based on manufacturer's suggested service life, the life expectancy of a water heater is about 8 to 12 years. That, of course, will vary with the severity of local weather, the unit design, quality of installation and the level of maintenance your unit has received. If your water heater is more than 10 years old, leaks around the base of the tank, and / or works erratically or not at all, it probably needs to be replaced.

How do you know that you need to replace your water heater? In most cases, when your device doesn't provide water as hot as you want it to be. This is usually caused by a faulty thermostat or a defective heating element.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters, also known as demand-type or instantaneous water heaters, provide hot water only when needed. They don't store hot water for possible use at any time, saving energy and money.

Tankless water heaters heat water directly. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit and it's heated by a gas burner or an electric element.

For homes that use hot water daily, tankless water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional tank water heaters. Although the cost of a tankless water heater is higher than that of a conventional storage water heater, the tankless device will last longer and have lower operating and energy costs.
